Some items become classics through association with other products.
The Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Company (3M’s) produced abrasive papers until 1925 when one of their laboratory assistants developed ‘masking tape’. This was a forerunner of the clear tape specially produced for a local company - using cellophane and an adhesive layer. ‘Scotch Tape' as the brand became known needed an office dispenser and this design used accurately moulded plastic halves to clip together. The 3M’s company have always responded to the needs of their clients and provide a superb series of case study topics for the study of innovation.
