Maudsley ‘s invention of the lathe – a screw cutting machine – which was able to accurately cut screw threads gave new scope for engineers. Without the ability to turn metal parts, many of the component parts of other machines would have taken far longer and greater skills to create. The screw cutting lathe allowed precision repetition of shapes too and Maudsley‘s fist major creation was a thread over 5 feet long .
