The development in foam plastics since the 1950’s has allowed a range of design possibilities to emerge. Fibres and gases can be injected into polymers with the resulting material being both strong and light. Materials such as these have been used extensively in the production of cars but also appear in furnishings such as this 1980 design “ New York Sofa ”
The potential for polymers to be extruded, pultruded and injected into moulds has allowed for the creation of organic and rounded shapes when previously there was less freedom of choice for the designer. Born in 1939 Gaetano Pesce has expanded the horizons of Italian and world design with his exciting and imaginative creations in the realms of painting, sculpture, film and theatre design as well as the exciting interior products seen here.
