If you were out walking the dog and came back
from the walk with a hairy dog covered in spiky
seeds from the grasses and plants through which the dog had been running – would you come up with an idea that could changed fashion design and garments -
Most children will have played the game of
throwing teasels at the woollen garments of
friends and seeing them stick to the material.
Mestral’s idea (and patent of 1951) of synthetic
hook and eye structures that have the same
effect provided a modern alternative to Sundback’s zip-fastener – although the garment industry were once again slow to realise the potential. About eight years of development and exploration of different materials that might be suitable led him to feel that Nylon had the best properties and the product was first used to hold insulation inside vehicles. Now it holds shoes in place as well as badhes at conference meetings, displays on walls and fashion items too,
